Photographer, painter, calligrapher; to categorize Joan Gallagher as one type of artist would be a great disservice. Hailing from Jersey City and residing at the Jersey Shore, Joan takes art to a whole new level. While much of Joan’s work seems to feature the ever famous Jersey Shore, there are no boundaries to the work that she creates. From mini watercolors to great acrylic canvasses, from simple classic photography to inverted abstract paintings, from home paintings to commercial murals, Joan’s style encompasses it all. As people, we have ever changing emotions/ Some days we want peaceful, more simple and classic art and some days we want art that challenges our thoughts and senses. Joan is an artist that gives you both. If you have ever had the honor to sit down for a cup of tea (or wine) with Joan, you will experience her passion for a creative lifestyle within minutes of getting to know her. Some people like art, some people love art, some people study art, and then there are those that above all three are born with it.
Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I have always loved painting, drawing, etc and have tried many different mediums. For many years, I was painting with watercolor, which I still love, but recently found that acrylics are a new and exciting medium. Most of these paintings start out as photos that I have taken. I play around with the images on the computer and when I have the one I want, I paint it. It is truly so much fun.
Many of the images are focused on the Jersey Shore where I spent summers as a child and now live here as an adult. This is where I find peace and quiet and even get energized and wanted others to feel that way too. I hope that when you view them you feel the warmth of the ocean on your face and sun on your hair.
I started doing this new challenge for myself this past summer. Everyday I paint a little image on a 3"x3" paper tile based on the national day calendar. These are really really fun for me. I decided that life is sometimes just too serious and I needed to think outside the box and just have a little fun. I try to do them in ten minutes, some take a bit longer, but I try not to make it my life's work. I post them on my Instagram account, good or bad, ( and some really aren't that good!!!!!) It doesn't matter though, it's about the process and just having a little fun. It has helped me to explore subject matters that I never would have tried before, so, I say that is success in itself!!! I am currently doing them in black and white just to change it up a bit. Check out my instagram account: joangallagherart!
I am part of a group of photographers called Black Glass Gallery. We met on social media and have weekly meetups. ( I don't go to all, but try as often as I can.). The goal is to go with a group to various places and take photos just for the love of photography. Going with the group has really changed my life in so many ways. Meeting new people and seeing the same things through others eyes is so refreshing and fun.
My goal is to continue to keep on painting, taking pictures, drawing and doing whatever it takes to just keep making art and the world around me filled with beauty.
So, again, thank you for the visit. Sit, have a cup of tea ( or whatever suits you ), and enjoy! If you have any questions, feel free to email me. I'd be happy to chat.
